Allison, Rolls-Royce, Bendix, & Pesco: Big names in manufacturing during WWII
If you know anything about engine and component manufacturing during World War II, then the names Allison, Rolls-Royce, Bendix, and Pesco are very familiar to you. Although in modern times, Allison and Rolls-Royce are most famous for their roles powering the P-51 Mustang, they both had a profound effect on many other aspects of aviation during the 40's and beyond. And of course Bendix, who was the umbrella over companies like Scintilla, Eclipse, and Pioneer, was also a huge player in the manufacturing war effort. Pesco fabricated and supplied aircraft manufacturers with numerous models of hydraulic pumps and electric motors. The "Lasher's Approved Propeller Installation Reference Book" linked below is actually a really neat resource. The introduction explains it like this:
"This handbook is compiled to provide a complete handy reference for 1,060 propellers and their approved airplane and engine installations applicable to private and business airplanes up to 265 horsepower."
It includes information on Beech, Flottorp, Hartzell, Lewis, McCauley, and Sensenich propellers in a series of charts that are actually as handy as they claim to be!
